One has a wonderful look about the Grunewald and the bordering cities of the devil's mountain which is in the northern edge of the Grunewalds. Beside the Müggelbergen the devil's mountain with 114.7 m about NN is the highest elevation in Berlin.
Devil's mountain
The devil's mountain which exists, actually, of two mountains from the nearby devil's lake got the name. Here of the artificial mountain the shell of the military-technical faculty which should be finished within the scope of the national-socialist project of the world capital and imperial capital of Germania was at times of the national socialism. After the Second World War this shell was sprinkled and the area was transformed to a rubble dump. All together 25 million m ³ remains rubble were piled up.
A use as a leisure area with ski slope and toboggan run was planned, however, it was not moved, because the Americans used the mountain as a listening station. The station mobile in the beginning was substituted with a firm installation, the devil's mountain got his recognition sign preserved till this day: five radar domes.
At the end of the cold war and the case of the Berlin Wall the station was given up by the Americans and the electronic facilities were removed. However, the radar arrangements could be still used for some time as a civil aerial supervision for the air traffic. In the meantime the former listening station had been sold to a private investor. The plannings for an exclusive residential arrangement, a museum and a hotel and conference centre, however, failed. Today the area is furthermore in the hand of the investor's group insolvent in the meantime.
Today the devil's mountain is liked above all with mountain bikers, travellers, paraglider airmen and of course also to solar adorers. In winter the small ski slope is well visited and also the cross-country skiing cross-country trail invites to the winter sports. In 1986 a world cup slalom took place on the occasion of the 750-annual celebration of Berlin on the ski slope.
